When the tube connection is made the outer sheath of the duct is removed therefore the tube is exposed to the outside environment. At these connection points, a branch closure is needed to protect the exposed tubes. These closures can be used for direct buried applications or installation inside a manhole or handhole. In order to remain cost effective, the closures are not water tight, but the duct connections points are well protected from moisture by straight connectors and end caps. The three main closure types are named after their shape. The I/Y closure, T closure, and D closure.
All of these closures accept a wide variety of different sizes and shapes of microducts with interchangeable rubber grommets located at each opening. The grommets may be completely solid with no opening if that particular opening will not be utilized, or will have a different sized hole depending on the application. The various sizes and configurations of microduct compatible with each closure type are listed on this page
The I/Y closure is named for its straight shape with two potential openings on either end. It is generally used in the “I” configuration with one opening used on each end and a straight connection made inside, or the “Y” configuration with a single opening used on one side and both ends used on the other side, forming a branch where the two branching pathways travel in the same direction.

The T closure is named for its three openings with one branch intersecting the straight pathway at a right angle. This would be used for situations where one larger microduct must branch off into two smaller branches travelling in different directions.

The D closure is similar to the I/Y closure in terms of the types of branches that it would typically be used for, with it’s openings configured in the same way. The difference is that the D closure has much more working room inside, allowing it to accept larger microduct bundles.
